Sensitive Plant
Mimosa Pudica
Annual
The Sensitive Plant is exceptionally unique and wonderful to grow! Upright plant with attractive fern like green leaves that fold shut when you touch them temporarily and then they open again. Also the branches move from upright to down when touched. At sundown the Sensitive Plant goes to bed by closing all of it’s leaves and putting down all of it’s branches. At sunrise The Sensitive Plant opens all of it’s leaves and lifts up it’s branches again for the day. Darling purplish-pink puff flowers adorn the plant very often and for long periods of time. This makes a wonderful house plant grown indoors in a pot. Can also be grown outdoors as an annual, in a border, container, hanging basket or as an accent plant. Can be brought inside in the fall. Native to South America-Brazil. Nice to grow.
Sowing: Place seeds in a container of warm water and let them soak overnight before planting them to aid faster germination. Plant seeds in a pot 1/8 of an inch deep in light potting soil and water well and gently. Keep near a sunny window.
Spacing: 12-15 inches Height: 5 feet Spread: 3 feet Days to germination: 7-30 days Soil: rich, any well-draining soil. Tolerant of nutrient poor, rocky or lean soils; well drained. Or a good general use potting soil. Water: Keep soil evenly moist, not soggy and water when the surface of the soil feels dry. Light: Full sun to part sun.
Information: As a house plant it should be pruned or pinched back regularly to encourage branching and to keep it full and to prevent legginess.
