Heirloom variety that is reported to be a century old from Native Americans of the Cherokee nation. Cherokee Purple features, excellently flavored 12 ounce beefsteak size fruits on indeterminate open pollinated plants that produce large crops. The fruits have unusual coloring of dusky red and green shouldered, with purple, black and brown coloring–very unique. Fruits are extremely sweet. Excellent for eating fresh, salads, slicing, canning, and drying. Widely regarded! A very unique and beautiful, tasty selection to plant in the garden!
Sowing: Begin indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost, sowing seeds 1/8 of an inch deep. Or direct sow outside after all danger of frost. Provide light after emergence. Keep soil moist during germination. Harden off before transplanting outside. Planting in full sun, transplant by setting the plant deep, up to the first true leaves by digging a deep hole. Transplant carefully, avoid disturbing roots. Water thoroughly.
