Narrow gray green leaves with lovely fragrant purplish blue flowers that are up to 1/2 in length that bloom in the summer. This is the lavender that is cultivated for the lavender essence that is used in soaps, oils, and perfumes. Buds should be harvested right before they open. Flowers also can be dried and they have a sweet scent when dried. Dried flowers are used to fill sachets to perfume linens and clothing. It is good in flower beds and containers. It is known to attract butterflies, bees, and birds. A nice plant to grow.
Sowing: Direct sow in the spring as soon as temperatures are around 70 degrees F., or start inside 12 weeks before the last frost. Press seeds onto soil surface, barely covering as seeds benefit from light. Keep moderately moist while germinating. Do not overwater. Can also be sown direct outside in the fall. But spring sowing is best. Plant prefers full sun but will tolerate some shade. Transplant after danger of frost, when plants are 3- or more inches in height. Freezing can improve germination.
